Spencer's Imagination

So I'm new to this whole preschool thing so I have a couple questions...

A) Is it normal for my usually very outgoing child to NOT want to tell me what happened at school?

B) Is it normal for him to make things up that never actually happened?
First day of school he had yams for snack... not.
He almost got a time out for not putting a toy away... not.
Today he stood on top of the table and didn't get to eat the rest of his snack... not.

So when I ask his teacher, she's is just like, huh? What are you talking about?

I am so confused. I am not really sure what to believe. I don't know why he's making things up... Is preschool not exciting enough that he has to fabricate stories?

Well, I've already told you that Ky's the same way about telling me about her day. Although a thought just occurred to me: School is probably the first thing that is totally "his" experience. Maybe, in some way, this is a kid's way of showing some independence.

As for making things up, he strikes me as a pretty bright kiddo and I suspect he has a mischevious streak to him. Since you're not with him, he may be enjoying seeing what you'll believe when he does decide to tell you what's going on.

I wouldn't worry about it. I think he's just having fun being "grown up." :)

It's perfectly normal. My 4 1/2 year old only recently started telling me about things that happen at preschool and he started when he was 3. He still tells me they have Ravioli everyday, which of course they don't, and talks as if everything happened yesterday.

He was punched in the eye in August. He told me about it just the other as if it happened again the exact same thing way. I think this was a trick to get himself a new toy since I felt bad for him when he got punched in the eye!

For a while I would ask him questions about what he learned, what he did and the answer would be nothing or I don't know mom, stop asking me questions. Recently I started asking him who he played with during his time at school. He likes to talk about who he played with so then he opens up about what really happened.

I think they just have active imaginations at this age and love to tell a good story. Wait until he comes home and says "want to hear my story." Now those are hilarious!

Good luck :)

Expect kids not to tell you anything that happened at school most of the time. You have to ask them at any age. Unless something really great happened to them, they will not volunteer any info.
